What’s in the name 4?

GHOTI is an imaginary word, used to show how complicated English spelling is.  To understand how ridiculous English spelling can be, try to pronounce the word GHOTI according to the rules below:

  • gh pronounced as in ‘lauGH’
  • o pronounced as in ‘wOmen’
  • ti pronounced as in ‘naTIon’


And now try to follow these instructions:

  • gh pronounced as in NIGHT
  • o pronounced as in PEOPLE
  • t pronounced as in BALLET
  • i pronounced as in BUSINESS

so now try to pronounce the word GHOTI
